An
Interview
With
Steve Avian Of The ShamaYoga School...
What Is Moksha
Yoga?
Moksha
is an ancient sanskrit word
meaning “liberation.” It is often used in the Buddhist, Hindu and
Jain traditions to signify the ultimate freedom of the soul.
Yoga
as an art of liberation can be
found at the core all the Eastern traditions of spirituality.
What is precisely meant by Moksha
as
“liberation”?
Moksha is a state in which the
soul can
exist independently of external influences, a transcendent
state, beyond the body mind complex. Its a state in which the soul
regains the wisdom, beauty and the power inherent within its true
nature. Moksha could be described as enlightenment. Ultimately, it is
indescribable.
How Do We Attain To A State Of
Moksha
In Yoga Practice?
All forms of yoga, to varying
degrees
move us towards this state. Practitioners will naturally gravitate
towards a style that reflects their own needs and capabilities.
Many yoga styles begin with the
body,
for example, Hatha Yoga, and the three bases of posture, breathing and
relaxation. Others begin with a more meditative approach.
What are some of the traditional
approaches to yoga?
In the Indian traditions, this
meditative approach is termed “Raja Yoga.” Bhakti yoga is the
yoga of devotion. The other two main paths which are described in the
sacred book
“Bhagavad Gita” are Gnana yoga and Kama yoga.
Kama yoga is the yoga of good
works in
the world, dedicated to God. Gnana yoga is the yoga of wisdom and
study of the sacred texts.
These are the four classical
styles of
yoga. Of course, there are other yoga styles, such as "Tantric yoga",
“Kundalini Yoga” and "Laya yoga", all of which cultivate an
understanding and enhancement of the
powers within the life force itself.
So all the various paths
eventually at
some point take us to a place of integration and transcendence of the
fluctuations occurring within the mind and the body.
Moksha yoga then is the final
liberation in which the freed soul can rejoice in regained spleandour,
harmonised with the universe and limitless.
